The Six Sigma Institute had the distinct honour of being invited to participate in the 10th Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Graduation Ceremony of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH) and HKSH Medical Group. This momentous occasion marked another significant milestone for HKSH in advancing its commitment to excellent healthcare services and a culture of continuous improvement. The ceremony aimed to commend numerous project teams who, by applying the Lean Six Sigma methodology, had brought about remarkable enhancements to the hospital. Through the presentation of Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards, it further sought to encourage staff members to pursue excellence and embrace innovation.
As the first private hospital in Hong Kong to implement Lean Six Sigma, HKSH’s dedication to quality enhancement stands as a benchmark for the industry. Dr. Walton Li, the Medical Superintendent, demonstrated profound foresight in personally initiating this transformative journey many years ago, consistently providing guidance and support throughout its evolution. He underscored that Lean Six Sigma is more than just a set of tools; it is a systematic mindset that guides the hospital’s staff to uphold HKSH’s core spirit of “pursuing excellence,” continuously optimizing processes, and elevating patient care quality and operational efficiency. Over the years, Dr. Li’s hands-on involvement, accompanying frontline personnel in embedding Lean Six Sigma principles into daily operations, has been pivotal to the flourishing development of HKSH’s Lean culture.
One of the highlights of this year’s graduation ceremony was the compelling presentations by the various project teams. Through data analysis and systematic solutions, they demonstrated outstanding results in areas such as enhancing medical efficiency, optimizing patient experience, and reducing operational costs. These projects not only highlighted the immense potential of Lean Six Sigma in practical application but also embodied the collaborative spirit and innovative capabilities of the team members. The judging panel comprised a distinguished lineup, with members of the Hospital Management Committee personally presiding, including Dr. Walton Li, Medical Superintendent; Dr. TSAO Yen Chow, Deputy Medical Superintendent; and Dr. Joseph Chan, Deputy Medical Superintendent. Notably, this year’s judging panel also included two internal Lean Six Sigma Black Belts trained within HKSH. This initiative not only reflected the maturity of the hospital’s Lean Six Sigma implementation, proving its success in cultivating internal experts with profound professional knowledge and practical experience, but also infused a deeper layer of practical experience and professional insight into the project evaluation, making the assessment criteria more rigorous and closely aligned with operational realities.
The ceremony commenced in an enthusiastic yet solemn atmosphere, with HKSH management, key department heads, medical practitioners, and healthcare professionals who had either undergone Lean Six Sigma training or expressed keen interest, all invited to witness this significant occasion. The event began with an opening address by Dr. Walton Li, who reflected with deep sentiment on HKSH’s Lean Six Sigma journey and how, over the years, he has accompanied frontline staff in transforming theory into practice, collectively pursuing excellence in healthcare services. Following this, Dr. YK Chan, Founding Chairman of the Six Sigma Institute, delivered a vote of thanks. Dr. Chan highly commended HKSH’s continuous innovation in the Lean Six Sigma domain, from being the first private hospital in Hong Kong to implement this methodology to successfully cultivating internal Six Sigma Black Belts, and further to actively incorporating elements of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to enhance process management and improvement effectiveness. He emphasized that all these initiatives perfectly align with the Six Sigma Institute’s core ethos: “Your Partner for Growth.” Dr. Chan’s address not only acknowledged HKSH’s vision demonstrated in its century-long journey and the establishment of its Innovation and Professional Training Academy but also bore witness to its unwavering determination to continuously break new ground in healthcare management.
Following the project presentations, Dr. YK Chan presented certificates to the graduating Green Belt candidates, acknowledging their dedication throughout their Lean Six Sigma learning journey. Subsequently, the ceremony reached its climax with the highly anticipated announcement of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Grand Awards. Dr. Walton Li, Dr. TSAO Yen Chow, and Dr. Joseph Chan individually presented these prestigious accolades to the deserving teams, recognizing their exceptional contributions to their improvement projects. These awards served not only as an endorsement of their project outcomes but also as a significant encouragement for all team members committed to continuous improvement. The remaining awards were presented by Professor Dr. CHOW Shew Ping and Dr. Lin Wai Chi, Ada, further inspiring all participants to integrate Lean Six Sigma principles into their daily work and contribute to the hospital’s long-term development.
The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Joseph Chan, Deputy Medical Superintendent. He reiterated his appreciation for the efforts of all participants in driving HKSH’s culture of continuous improvement and looked to the future, expressing hope that Lean Six Sigma would continue to take root and flourish across all levels of the hospital, yielding even more fruitful outcomes.
