ESG with Six Sigma: The Foundamental

ESG with Six Sigma: The Foundamental

This article introduces Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) as a foundational concept and frames its practical relevance in contemporary business. In recent years, ESG has evolved from a peripheral consideration into a central component of corporate strategy and accountability. It is no longer merely an optional initiative but increasingly regarded as an essential direction for sustainable and responsible business development.

Questions are raised continuously. What exactly is ESG? Is ESG “no longer an option but an essential step”? Who should take the lead in initiating ESG? Who is responsible for translating ESG from abstract principles into practical, actionable measures? Ultimately, who benefits from ESG adoption?

More and more questions came to mind for many people. Starting from this paper, a series of ESG-related papers will be posted to share our views and suggestions, helping our members create their own ESG path. To better understand ESG’s societal dimensions, it is useful to draw a parallel with the long-standing public slogan in the 70s Hong Kong, “Keep Hong Kong Clean”. This is almost the earliest ESG version and similarly became a message encouraging personal responsibility to build a cleaner and healthier city. Let’s fast forward to ESG today. It seems to be another message to the people, encouraging responsibility for building an environmental, social, and governance approach for enterprises. Should this be the case, the answers to those questions at the beginning of this are very obvious – ESG should be a change in everyone’s behaviours, like almost everyone uses smartphones today and social media is our future communication channel.

This paper serves as the starting point with general ESG concepts and follows with different views of ESG in the real world, and aims to explore more ideas by sharing, especially in relation to real business environments and frontline implementation. The objective is not only to clarify ESG concepts but also to encourage organisations and professionals to develop their own ESG pathways.

What is ESG? At its most basic level, ESG is commonly understood as “Environmental, Social and Governance.” However, this definition only explains what ESG stands for, not what it represents. ESG is a set of standards adopted by businesses to evaluate their ethical behaviour, sustainability and overall company responsibility beyond just financial performance. From this perspective, ESG should not be confined to high-level strategies or corporate declarations. Instead, it should be translated into concrete actions and measurable practices that are embedded in routine business activities. Just as digital technology and social media have become integral to modern communication, ESG should evolve into a normalised and expected component of organisational behaviour.

Importantly, ESG is neither purely strategic nor purely operational, and effective ESG requires alignment between long-term strategic planning and practical implementation at all levels of the organisation. Senior leadership may set the direction, but meaningful impact depends on execution by individuals across all functions, particularly those on the frontline.

The ultimate beneficiaries of ESG extend beyond any single group. Organisations benefit through enhanced reputation, risk management, and long-term resilience. Employees gain from improved working conditions and ethical environments. Society benefits from more sustainable and responsible business practices. In essence, ESG creates shared value across the entire stakeholder ecosystem.

More and deeper discussion about ESG will follow. ESG should not just be in one’s mind or thoughts but something solid and real in everyone’s life.
